Priorities

Priorities for Bloomfield's Future

Bloomfield works better when we work together. These priorities are based on years of listening, learning, and working alongside you to get things done.

Dream Together & Involve Youth

Let's make Bloomfield a place where young people feel valued and heard - not just included, but invited.

  • Add a youth representative to the Parks & Recreation Board
  • Create regular forums where students can share ideas about Bloomfield's future
  • Ask young people directly: what would make you want to build your future here?

Downtown Development

Our downtown square is more vibrant and better occupied than it was a decade ago. Let's keep building on what works.

  • Support businesses that are investing in the square
  • Continue the city-Main Street partnerships that have proven successful
  • Encourage sidewalk cafés, weekend events, and improved walkability

Housing & Community Development

Bloomfield needs more housing options for families, seniors, and workers.

  • Encourage infill development in existing neighborhoods
  • Support a mix of housing types that serves our community
  • Evaluate Lake Fisher improvements including recreation upgrades, trails connecting to the city, and potential housing while being good stewards of the public resource

Strong Infrastructure

We need to modernize electric, water, sewer, and natural gas systems using state and federal funding so we stop wasting money on outdated equipment.

  • Upgrade aging electrical infrastructure to improve reliability and efficiency
  • Sequence water and sewer upgrades to minimize disruption
  • Evaluate the condition and investment needs of the city's natural gas utility
  • Use grant-writing experience to access infrastructure funding
  • Work with technical partners like Iowa State University and Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA)

Efficiency & Resilience

Small towns can plan smart, stretch dollars, and take the long view.

  • Use grants and partnerships to reduce pressure on property taxes
  • Make efficiency improvements that save money long-term
  • Plan for resilience against storms and emergencies
  • Support practical tools like the expanded tool library

Business Growth

Make it easier for employers and entrepreneurs to succeed in Bloomfield - whether they're on the square, in industrial areas, or starting something new.

  • Support existing businesses with practical help, not bureaucracy
  • Explore options for industrial park improvements
  • Modernize zoning and permitting processes
  • Encourage the mix of businesses that creates good jobs
